A Japanese wartime drama following Shoichi Hamada, a young man who evades military conscription during World War II and lives in hiding until the end of the war. Twenty years later, his peaceful life is threatened when his hidden past is exposed, forcing him to confront questions of freedom, conformity, and the choices he made during the war.

昭和４１年。都内の私立大学の庶務課で課長補佐として働く浜田庄吉（森山未來）は戦時中、出征の前日に逃走を図り、日本中を偽名を使って放浪しながら生き延びた過去を持っている。戦後、亡き父の縁者でもある今の職場の理事から、職場だけでなく年の離れた美しい姪までをも紹介され結婚。今は何不自由ないサラリーマン生活を送っていたのだが、学内で起きたある窃盗事件がきっかけで、彼の人生に暗雲が立ち込めていく。
